Morning came way too early after the event at Hurlburt Chapel. Tom Baroco is picking me up at 8:15AM. I'm talking to Jodi who tells me it's 8:15AM. I'm totally unaware that Fort Walton Beach, Florida time is the exact time as Texas. But for a moment I'm freaked that I'm an hour late! I call Marilyn and she calmly informs me that we're in the same time zone. Lord have mercy. The condo is located on the beautiful white sandy beaches and frankly, I could stay here for hours just in awe of the beauty. However, Tom is on the way to pick me up for three sessions
at St. Paul Catholic Elementary School. We drive about 40 minutes, and let me tell you folks, this is a beautiful place. Water everywhere...estuaries...blue sky...just a beautiful place. I'm thinking vacation location. YEAH BABY. Tom says he's sad that I couldn't meet his wife, Dominique, and wouldn't you know as we pull up to the school, who is walking across the way with baby in hand? YEPPERS. It's the lovely Mrs. Dominique Baroco with Joey Baroco in hand. Small world. Wait, there's Tom's dad! Tom introduces us, and lo and behold, I'm meeting the Baroco family! So God is a tricky God. I meet Maryann, the PTA person who managed to pull this visit together! My first audience is Kindergarten through 2nd grade. DUDE. They rock and roll; so beautiful. I feel like the Catholic Barney. 3rd grade through 5th grade is next and we rock the casbah. Miss Camille, the new music teacher leads the school in OPEN MY EYES and folks, I've never heard the song sung more beautifully! Camille is a gift. Lunch with the staff and faculty. Cool hanging with the adults. One teacher is celebrating her birthday with a birthday sash. Sweet. After the lunch, I get the 6th grade through 8th grade. Every session is different. Which is cool, because every group is unique. Same message. Different delivery. I meet Maria Baroco too! There's a little baby Baroco too. I meet Michelle Nguyen, a student and aspiring violinist. I give her a word of encouragement to play that thing with all her heart and watch what God does....
Tom and I hit the road after the last session. We've only a brief moment to fish and that's when we have the Frost Bite Puffer Fish Extravaganza! Brother actually takes me fishing and I witness his catch of a mighty 4 oz puffer fish with massive pokey spines and humongous puffer-poofy-fications. By the way, Tom and I suffer a neat bout of frost bite, but hey, we're having fun. After that fun and painful adventure, Lisa drives up and takes me to St. Mary Catholic School for a Middle School Rally! Mathew Bell is there. Alex, Jessica, MacKenzie, Elizabeth, Alisa, and other very cool young folk. A number of folks from Eglin AFB, Hurlburt Chapel, and the San Destin conference are there. Amazing. It's a blaze of songs and stories, and even the craziest skit of the Good Samaritan. Lisa and I got dinner right before, so we're fueled up and ablaze with activity. Full house of folks on a Monday night??? YIKES.
It's been a blur of a visit to Florida this time around, but it's been wonderful and beautiful. The people. The faith. The friendship. I look forward to a return! Remember what I said about Marilyn Austin? Well, she picks me up at the condo at 4AM to drive me to the airport. Is she crazy?! No, she's faithful, generous, and a servant of the Lord. A true friend of God....
