February 10-11, 2007
Anne McGaugh, outstanding friend of Jesus, and Diocesan Director of Youth Ministries for the Diocese of St. Augustine, picks me up at the airport, loads guitar, the tee shirts, the clothes bag, and eventually, even me, into the vehicle and we're blasting off from Jacksonville towards St. Augustine where the annual Diocesan Youth Conference is going to be held. Anne and I get a chance to speak about the uniqueness of the diocese, the area in general, and ministry to young people in the Church. The Diocesan paper ran an article that Anne had asked me to write, an invitation of sorts, to the
diocese to pray and support the efforts of the Church and her mission, especially as it applies to ministering to, for and with young people. We pass through cities, towns, I think even a city named, NICE. Yikes! We arrive at St. Joseph Academy, and folks are already there, setting up, building, cleaning, gathering, cooking, preparing...Anne introduces me to members of the team. Crazy adults spending a perfectly beautiful weekend...with teenagers! Gotta love it. I see my friend, Chuck Frost and musician pals from Savannah, Georgia, setting up their gear for house band. What was once, Touch of Grey is now, FISH-EYED FOOLS. Hugs and high fives and I meet more folks. Young people start to pour in to the event. Folks have driven from all over. There's a group of young adults emceeing the event. Lay missionaries, Dave, Cynthia, Kelly, and Remas. All four are from a community called FOCUS and live in community at University of North Florida. Pretty cool. Dave is the FOCUS Campus Director, and the four of them emceed magnificently. Two days of High School and Junior High students gathering from all around to pray, play and have a good day of renewal and recommitment to the mission of the Church.Melody, Regina, Brian, Cindy, Sr. Terre and groups of youth and adults from St. Javier in Live Oak and St. Francis Xavier, LIVE OAK, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mayo. Lots of history in this town of St. Augustine. Lots of taith this weekend!
