Oscar and Jesus; Living The Promise

Blessed Holy Thursday and happy feast day of Archbishop Oscar Romero. Today we commemorate the last supper, where Eucharist is instituted in the breaking of the bread, sharing of the cup, and washing of the feet. This holy day is a cool way to say, "this is what's it's all about." Jesus knows us fully, loves us fully, and gives himself fully to us. Then he gives us a new commandment after the bread and wine are shared, and the feet are washed. "As I have loved you, so you must love one another." And there we have it....
The sign that we belong to Christ is made known when we love one another as he has loved us. BAM. Jesus gives everything. He holds nothing back. He is giving his very self. "Take my body. Take my blood." Jesus is living the promise.
Monseņor Oscar Romero, on March 25th, 1980, was gunned down while presiding over Eucharist. Standing with the poor; shunned by other religious leaders, many of them Catholic; ignored by the Carter Administration in trying to halt the military aid that was being used to torture and murder the Salvadoran people; trying desperately to evangelize the soldiers that were murdering their own people, to stop in the name of Jesus.....and Oscar's blood is shed.
This is Romero's literal and ultimate gift of self that simply results in his death. He is living the Eucharistic command from our Lord, "be radically present," and as a result of his obedience, love and devotion, his life his given....not taken. Oscar was living the promise.
"Romero's murder was a savage warning. Even some who attended Romero's funeral were shot down in front of the cathedral by army sharpshooters on rooftops. What endures today is Romero's promise; which is Jesus' promise; which is God's promise. I am so absolutely FOR YOU,
that I pour myself completely. God is the gift of self, the greatest gift of self that longs to reverberate, reflect, and perpetuate in our living, our dying...and our rising.
