On August 5th, 1945, there were around 350,000 persons living in the city of Hiroshima, Japan. On August 6th, the United States dropped the first Atomic bomb. It was the beginning of a school day in Hiroshima. After the dust cleared, the city's population was 200,000. Over 150,000 persons were killed. Mostly civilians. Three days later, the United States dropped the second Atomic bomb on the port and fishing city of Nagasaki. Over 75,000 persons were killed. Mostly civilians.World War II was over. I looked all over for media coverage of this 60 year anniversary of the two atomic bombs. I couldn't find much on the TV, radio, or newpapers. I looked in Catholic newspapers, didn't find much there either....

I love the United States with all my heart. My grandfather was a 20 year US Navy veteran, a prisoner of war, and a proud and patriotic American. My dad was a 20 US Air Force veteran during the Vietnam War.

I am Franciscan and Oblate of Mary Immaculate by heart, and although I've a temper that most have no idea about, I strive to be a person of peace and non-violence. I often fail, just ask my family. Still, I strive to face the sins of violence in my life. Facing it is the first step to receiving the healing and transformation. Doing and living justice is the second step in receiving, making amends, healing, and ultimately...KNOWING GOD.

We can pray, go to mass, celebrate the sacraments, get a theological degree, record a religious CD or DVD, but if we do not DO JUSTICE, then we cannot KNOW GOD. Making an examination of conscience, facing our sin, our violence if you will, is an act of JUSTICE.

Facing the wrongs of our past, recent and remote, are always difficult, and often, seemingly impossible. However, I believe we contribute to the violence of the past and moreover, perpetuate the very same violence, if we do not face it, embrace it, admit it, and make an amends and a committment to do all that we can to stop the violence in all of its forms.

I pray the Christian community, especially the Catholic Church, will continue to do our part in facing the violence of our past and our present, and in so doing, will embody more and more, the peace of Christ that is in our very midst, AND is the way to know that we KNOW GOD.

I met a Japanese doctor who was the presence of Christ in the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I met a Senator from the Marshall Islands, the site of nuclear bomb testing that horrifically added up to Hiroshima type A-bombs being dropped every day, for 12 years! I heard the story of Takeshi, a young Japanese boy and his grandfather, and the night that Hiroshima ceased to be.

The Urakami Cathedral in downtown Hiroshima...leveled to the ground with the statues of the Madonna and St. John seemingly standing in witness to the devastation.

Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy.

A blessing on all those who suffered, died, survived and are now sharing their stories of hope...a blessing on all the victims and the perpetrators.

Jesus, give us your peace.
Let us do justice.
Let us know you.

Jesse
