During my nap, I get a number of phone calls that wake me up. One is my cousin, Alicia, asking about helping me at the concert with my tables and stuff. Among my super nieces in Guam are Maxima and Felicia, and they will be helping big time. More calls from folks who heard the radio interviews who simply wanted to talk to me. Guam is small, folks. How they got my hotel AND my room number is a mystery, but I was grateful that a connection (literally!) was made. Still dizzy from the lack of sleep, I managed to stumble from the bed into the shower for a much need clearing of the cobwebs. Moved slow, but steady, to the the lobby with tee-shirt/cd bags and guitar. Joe and Fred were right there....

Drove to Bishop Baumgartner High School for the concert, and lo and behold, my cousin John Manibusan was right there. Folks, the Manibusans in Texas and Alameda have some serious first cousins in Guam. Serious and massive amounts of cousins. Pretty darn cool. My nieces and nephews greeted me with the Chamoru "fangingi" greeting. I'll have to demo when I see you. And yes, I'm an elder to some. Set up of the CD/tee shirt table; sound check; greetings of the family, friends, and incoming concert attendees; the gymnasium begins to fill up. It looks like we could have more than a thousand, easy. I am of course, nervous, scared, and wondering what God might cook up tonight. I am introduced to many people. I face my fears, and walk among the crowd welcoming and thanking folks for attending. Many heard the radio interviews as well as attended the concert a year and a half ago. Many were first timers to me and my madness. The LIFETEEN band from St. Jude is led by Robert Hofmann, aka, Vice Mayor of Sinajana, opens the concert with a flurry of praise and prayer songs. He must be the youngest, and the hippest vice mayor on the planet. I tell him so. Great songs of faith. After about 15 minutes, Robert begins to introduce me. Joe Meno walks onstage and humorously tells the crowd that there has been a mix-up. Joe was going to give the concert. The crowd doesn't buy it of course, and I walk on stage as Joe walks off. A great show of welcome to me ensues, and I am humbled and again scared. Jumping into the water, I do all I can to get out of the way, and of course, the Holy Spirit does what she does best. And the evening is what it is. A moment of celebration, challenge, more challenge, a little stirring of the waves, prayer, story, and a challenge to receive the gifts and use them with reckless and faithfilled abandon. The Eucharist, and the sacraments in general don't call us to be comfortable, but rather should scandalize us from consumeristic spiritual, physical, emotional, and political complacency, and return us to our senses and to the core of the gospel. "As I have loved you, so you too must love one another. That's how they will know that you are my disciples. By your love for one another." Not by some perverse sense of religious superiority or supremacy. Not by self-righteous religious bullying. Not by how right, true, orthodox, conservative, liberal, progressive, or middle-of-the-road we are. That will never be the way. Don't get me started. Don't get me started. Lord have mercy. All of those elements are part of the essential story, but the big story is LOVE. I cannot tell you how this new commandment is rarely followed. I am guilty of it. This new commandment is rarely followed because we have to "surrender" something to be Christ-like; and to be Christ-like is what it takes to make it work. Okay, I'm done.

So, the evening is wonderful, beautiful, I'm sure a little disturbing to some, unsettling to others, but surely, a moment where the Holy Spirit lights some fires where fire is needed.

To be continued....
