Holy Days and Hollow Daze...

Got to spend some time in Alameda, California, home of the Manibusan and Osanna families. Good to visit my side of the family and Jodi's side of the family, and of course, know that there's only one ohana, one family, one people....it was the continuation of Holy Days...
Although by the sales ploys and repeat repeat repeat commercials on TV, you knew that the ongoing "Hollow-Daze" was coming to town. Heck, they arrived and....
....set up camp during the summer time. Now, a hollow-daze isn't a dig or a dis to shopping in general. A hollow-daze is result of well planned marketing strategies that aim simply for the true god of the developing worlds, the dollar, euro, and yen. The profit margin. Hollow-daze are born of the consuming cacophony of chaotic and coercive commercio-sterilization of the Holy Days....filling us with serious stress disorder and emptying us of the sacred, the soul, and the spirit.
But there are ways through the hollow-daze to the holy days...
Thanksgiving started with mass at St. Joseph Basilica, my home parish for about 5 years, before we moved to Texas. Fr. Rich delivered the homily of the century. Catherine B, and her music ministry team did such an act of grace with leading us in prayer. There were 20 million people in the music team, but the team was so humble and respectful, and SO MINDFUL of the ministry of music, that you didn't even "see" them. You could hear the assembly pray. And that my friends, is the stuff. Jodi and I were asked to "bring up the gifts." Haven't done that in a while. It was an honor and a blessing to us.
After this amazing celebration of the paschal mystery, we ended up on the superhighway of family thanksgiving celebrations. Over to my folks on Paru Street. Everyone was there, except my youngest brother Joey, and his family. Reina Manibusan, my niece was preparing a thanksgiving meal for her family, and my niece Jennifer, was in the Air Force out there somewhere. But there was Frank and Barb, Joe and Jackie, Jary and Karen, Jimmy and Alise, Carmyn and Jimmy, Toni and Eric, Haley and George, Jesse and Nina, Jaia, Jingai, Mochi, LJ, Jesse Ray, amazing! Isaiah, Jordan, Johna, Jaria, Jady, Johnnie, Jacob, Lolla-Janelle, Antonio, Jaryce, Karina, Gabriel, Halyn, Jackie, Erin, My nephew Jared, and his beloved Melody, just welcomed their first child, Alaya Selena Mia Manibusan, to the world, so they were still at the hospital. During the prayer, of course my heart was melting as I remembered my grandparents in heaven...and with us in spirit. There was food everywhere from everyone! Desserts, drinks, more desserts, more Chamoru food! It was bigger than Babette's Feast and the feast scene in HOOK, with Robin Williams. Bangarang!
The same for dinner at Jodi's sister Jennifer's house. Jennifer is a one-person-catering-and-hospitality crew! There was Tim, Steven and Nicole, Nick, Rick, Grandma Susie, Grandpa Rick, Mollie, Sarah, and Melody. Family. That one gift, although sometimes a difficult one to handle, is a lot to be grateful for, friends. So much. I remembered all who were blessed to share a meal and moment such as this, and remained attentive to the reality that there was much suffering in the world that needed to be brought to the table of prayer as well. I don't want a full house of loved ones, and a full table of plenty to ever put me in a Hollow Daze. These are Holy Days, man, and I won't daze up on the hollowness all around. Can't do it. Won't do it. Help me God to not caught in that.
Hey! You could get a laptop computer for $200 at Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry's Electronics, Costco, Price-Club! And if you miss the biggest hollow-daze shopping on the day after Thanks-giving, don't worry, MONDAY'S COMING! And that means billions of dollars of cyber sales! The only catch is that you have to stand in line on Thanksgiving night, preferrably at 10PM, at the very latest. Then you have to bundle up, huddle up, stay warm, stay safe, and try not to get into any fights about where your place in line is, who's space your trying to save, who spilled some litter or drink on your space, who's encroaching on your space. And what do you mean there's only one line and the line that I'm in isn't the one?! You know, little things like that. Nevermind the battle you're going to have with the customer service people that know that there's only 10 to 15 of these laptops for these 10-1500 people lined up for them. Nevermind that the company has to bill your credit card $900 but you'll be credited on Monday for the rebates and savings. Don't forget to call. Try and get some sleep when you can or you could be in a hollow-daze. Whoops! Too late!
The day after Thanksgiving we had a birthday party for Jennah, she turned 16 on November 15 but we live in Texas and Jennah's core of friends are her cousins and friends in Alameda. Needless to say, she was filled to overflowing with laughter, fun, more laughter, more fun, and so much love and life. It was crazy, the sounds of 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 year old with that energy and ruccus....I tell you, if I didn't work with thousands upon thousands of young people during the year, I probably would've had to be subdued by the authorities. But, friends, to see Jennah and Jayme, in the presence of family and friends, and their joy....it was a most awesome Holy Day.
Went to the Alameda Towne Center, the code name for "more hoity toity than the former name, "South Shore Shopping Center." Went to buy a gift for Josslynn's first birthday party. She is my sister Carmen's first ever grand-daughter! It was weird being surrounded by the lights, sounds, and the hollow-daze trappings trying to suck us into some serious consuming binge. But there I was, holding Miss Jodi's hand through it all. It was like, in the middle of the hollow-daze, we were having a holy day. YIKES! Where two or three are gathered...
Got to speak to Michael, Suz, Sammy and Micky Avolicino. Got to visit with Kenny, Mel, and Nick Penalver for about 43 minutes! They got me a pair of cargo shorts, a pair of big dog star wars boxers that read, "May the Farts Be With You!" Yikes. Made a couple of calls to folks. Saw the lovely Mrs. Jeanne Clark, friend of all, and early founder of ALL GOD'S CHILDREN, the charismatic prayer group that I was blessed to share in for a little while, years ago. She was in wheelchair, and just as full of the praise and love of God!
Holy Days, my friends. Holy Days.
