It's about Suzanne!

December 27th. Suzanne's birthday is today! She's a friend of mine. I met her at Cal State Hayward's Catholic Campus Ministry Center. I am the godfather of one of her two children...which in Guamanian terms, makes me the godfather of both their children! She was a youth minister for many years, plays piano, is a loving mother and wife, and is a great force in the universe. She has a great gift of insight that is uncanny. She has a wisdom sense of which I am often in awe.
Suzanne's husband is also a friend of mine, a brother really. She has been a life force in his life as well.....
Today's her day. But it's not about the day. It's about Suzanne. This day isn't really any more sacred, special, or holy than any other day. It's just that we set aside days to name what, or who is ALREADY special...sacred...and holy....and that "who," is my friend Suzanne.
Today Suzanne will be treated special. But that's the way it should be every day because it's not about the day. It's about Suzanne. She is a gem. A treasure. And we're blessed and better to be a part of her life.
Such is the same with Christmas. We celebrate the sacred, the special, and the holiness of Christmas on December 25th. But every day before and every day after, contains the special, the sacred, and the holiness of Christmas. It's not the day. It's about love incarnate. Love with us.
The same applies to our "Holy Days." If all we are doing is celebrating a day, then it is no surprise the fire and light of December 25th are like ash and smoke the day after.
We who claim Christ, must be a Christmas people. An Advent people. A Lenten and an Easter people, and more.
The gifts of a liturgical calendar and liturgical seasons give us moments; give us an opportunity as a people...to remember...to reconcile...and to renew who we are. We are the ones to whom Jesus said, "And when I leave, you will do even greater things!" Yikes.
Today is December 27th. I don't celebrate Suzanne's birthday. I, along with all who know and love her, celebrate Suzanne!
