The Miracles in New Orleans

On January 3rd, Ken Canedo and I had the privilege and the honor to visit some of the people in New Orleans. One of the immeasureable casualties of Hurricane Katrina and Rita, is the devasta-tion and destruction of countless schools, and the obvious displacement of students, families, faculty, and workers. If Katrina smashed, mashed, and bashed schools, where would they go? Where would the students go? The answer for seven or eight "displaced" schools was Archbishop Rummell in Metarie, Louisiana.
Ken and I arrived in New Orleans. Gary Ault, and his daughter, Sarah, picked us up at the airport and then proceeded to drive us through the various areas of destruction. We didn't have to travel very far to see it as the destruction was all around us. We drove through "ghost-towns" that use to be neighborhoods teeming with the lives of families, but are now, empty shells, broken, torn, ripped apart from the inside, outside, top and bottom, by Katrina. Majestic trees, that had once seen a hundred years of life or more, living history, torn from their roots by the storm, and now laying in contortion on the mud-covered earth.
Cars, 2000 lbs of motorized steel, thrown about by the wind and waves of Katrina, now gutted, twisted, and rendered useless; now perched impossibly up onto trees, porches, upside down, on their side, or on their front ends. Boats ripped from their moorings, crushing through buildings and mercifully stopped by the few walls that wouldn't go down in the storm.
Windows shattered everywhere. From small houses to the high rise buildings of downtown. The force of the storm found everyone and everything. And spared little. Glass, wood, metal -- if it was in the path of wind or wave, then it would be broken, shattered, ripped, torn, split, bent, and crushed. And after the wind and waves subsided, the bacteria, the mold, the elements of heat and cold, would take their turn on what was "left" of New Orleans.
I shuddered to think that what I was witnessing was but a scratch of the surface of the devastation. What of Biloxi and Mobile? What of the rest of the Gulf Coast, that once was the head story of every news station, but now had grown strangely silent. What of the stories of the people? The families? Was it not news anymore? Storm over. News over. Waiting for the next thing to sensationalize. Shame on us.
So we head over to get lunch before the concert at Archbishop Rummell, which is now called Archbishop Rummell Transitional School ("T" for "transitional") Another story of the aftermath of Katrina is the fact that so many people have yet to return to the scene of the storm, that not enough people are in the area to work in the businesses that are still viable, or at least, trying to be viable. MacDonald's closes at 2PM, because there are not enough people to work the afternoon and evening shift. Everywhere are signs that offer bonuses and incentives for those who are able and willing to sign up and work in a town where recovery is going to be long and arduous!
After lunch, over to "Rummell T," the nickname for the group of schools and students who have converged into one school. So where's the miracle? Imagine you go to a high school. Every high school has a rival school. Some have more than one. Imagine that in an instant, your school and every other "rival" school, have to now merge into one school. Schools that once taunted one another in words and on paper, and battled one another on the field of competition...now are ONE SCHOOL. Imagine that.
Friends, every individual school seemed to maintain their unique spirit of pride. When Ken and I shouted out their individual school names, the applause was thunderous. However, when Ken and I gave a shout out to Rummell T, the applause was thunderous times infinity! Stunning. Amazing. Inspiring.
Individual schools, in the aftermath of their lives being torn apart by Hurricane Katrina...find a way to rebuild their family, their school, their lives and their world.
Humbled by Gary Ault's courage to invite Ken and myself. Humbled by the young church of Louisiana. Humbled by the families who have sacrificed much and continue to sacrifice.
To all of you in the Gulf Coast...New Orleans...in Biloxi, Mobile, and the surrounding areas to which Katrina and Rita did not spare, you are the gift. You are the light.
You are the miracle.
