St. Joachim, San Lorenzo, CA
10:45 in the morning:
St. Joachim Catholic Elementary School
My goddaughter, Sammy, and her sister, Micki, attend St. Joachim school. I gave a concert with their dad, a little over a year ago, and was going to be in the area, so, there I was. In the gymnasium with a kaboogle of elementary kids ready to sing, scream, pray and display in all and any manner of enthusiasm. From Pre-K to 8th grade, we rolled with it. SPAM song, TURKEY song, COW SAYS MOO, Misa del Mundo songs, everything!
Everything Michael, Pete and I did, the children did better! And rightly so.
Let the children come to me....there's real tangible wisdom in this. If only we adults could catch at least a few more glimpses of it...

St. Joachim, San Lorenzo
6PM
An Ta, a friend of mine from the bay area, had been trying on behalf of his parish, to bring me in. Well, after many efforts, he succeeded. The SJRoC's pulled an event together in record time; filling the gymnasium with folks from all over! Jon Manongdon, opened for me and the band. Jon is an amazing and beautiful soul. Props to An, the SJRoC's, Fr. Sergio, and all who made this Faith Night a success. Send prayers of thanksgiving to them for living the mission! Pastor Grace Kaori Suzuki, from the Christ United Presbyterian Church, attended with her niece. Family and friends of 2 by 2 ministries attended. Donnie, drummer for 2 by 2, and his wife, Sue and their cool son, Jessiah, were there. Rich, Pete, Michael, Kenny, and Justin were there. The Spirit was there, as she always is...moving us and challenging us; inspiring us to stretch, be uncomfortable and be of service to others. Thank you Holy Spirit...

Sacred Heart High School, Atherton, CA
9:30AM
Elaine Yastishock, friend and former classmate from the Franciscan School of Theology, Berkeley, CA, invited me to her school to do a "thing" on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for her students. So me and a couple of the members of the band traveled to SHHS and did a presentation on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and Miss Rosa Parks. Well, sort of...I think the core of my talk, was in the spirit of: "Please get off of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and Miss Rosa Parks!" Simply, stop putting them on their pedestals and instead put their values, principles, and dreams, into our own powerful and transforming dream! Stop putting "it" on them. That lets us off the hook for a refusal to live their principles. Especially in the light of the gospel, where all of our praying, singing, celebrating, disciple-making, justice-living, is sometimes so far away from the poor. The POOR! THE POOR! THE POOR! That's whom the gospel is for...the poor. The poor are the one's left out. Without access. Without voice. Without privilege. Without opportunities. Who's left out? I won't say. You take a pencil and paper, write a list of those who don't have access to health care, medical care, health insurance, education, prenatal care, an attorney, legislation that will prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation, based on gender, based on age, based on the accent with which you speak English...and so forth. These are among the principles for which Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Miss Rosa Parks, and countless others have lived and died for. And these issues are not religious issues. They are an issue of the dignity of the human person issue. We, Catholics, have a direct kinship with that. It's what Jesus, lived, died, and rose again for...that we might be one; in love, compassion, and the justice of the realm of God.

Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep, San Francisco, CA
2PM to 4PM
My friend, Kathy Lorentz, had dreamed out this visit for a little while. She's a long time friend, child of God, servant of the Lord and friend of Jesus.
I met with the Jubilee Choir and other students to prepare, practice and pray for each other, and especially for the work we would do the following morning on behalf of the school, and in the mission of the Church, especially in the light of the day of Remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Miss Rosa Parks.
We prayed; sang; learned; laughed; reflected; ate food; ate more food; sang some more, learned, rehearsed, and prayed....asking for strength, for forgiveness, and for the strength to forgive. Asking to be strength for each other in service. Asking for the kind of strength of ordinary people like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Miss Rosa Parks, to do extraordinary things...

Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep, San Francisco
9:30AM to 10:30AM
This morning, we would take all of our preparations and plans, and trust them to the Holy Spirit who would give us what we needed. The challenge to dream our dream with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Miss Rosa Parks, Jesus of Nazareth, Dorothy Day, Mother Teresa, Oscar Romero, and others, was put forth to students, teachers, faculty, administrators, and anyone else in that room.
JUBILEE CHOIR, Jančt Whitaker, Tony Gomez, Chris and Bryan Lorentz, Mark, Nick, Matt, Gustavo and Maggie, and other gifted students supported and delivered the event. We even got help from one of the student's grandmothers to speak for Miss Rosa Parks. The challenge to take Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and Miss Rosa parks off of the pedestals and right back into our own flesh, spirit, and dreams....
The mission of the gospel does not dwell on paper, in thought nor in good intention. The mission of the gospel is neither a mission or a strategy. It does not dwell in ideology, theology, or philosophy. All of these are important elements of the mission. However, the mission of the gospel is in the day to day living, advocating, protecting, defending, and lifting up the poor. Not just the "poor" that we are comfortable with lifting up, but all the poor, especially the poor with whom we are most uncomfortable in lifting.
