So Joyce Klava, friend of young people in the church and beyond, extends an invitation for me to visit the Grand Junction Deanery in Colorado. Saturday night concert at St. Joseph Church. Right after mass, Fr. Don and the Holy Rollers praise and prayer band, strike up the concert. For a Saturday AND the same night that the Broncos are playing the Patriots in the playoffs, there was quite a turnout! Lord have mercy. The Holy Rollers play a set of about 30 minutes, whereby I'm tapped to deliver some undercover catechesis to the assembly. It's a cool hour of prayer, music, story, celebration and challenge to the church, for all of us, to wake up and get to it....
The following day I'm at Grand Junction Deanery Youth Day in Cedaredge, CO. There's a bit of snow falling, with which I'm completely not okay nor competent. Yes, folks, I'm not a snow kid, snow boy, snow angel, snow bunny, or snow bubba.
But the retreat...the theme, WHO DO YOU SAY I AM; that rocks pretty cool. Lots of youth, high school and junior high school show up for the retreat. Fr. Don from the Holy Rollers runs in with a makeshift PA System for me to speak, sing, and strum my guitar from...thank you Fr. Don!!
Lots of opportunity here. WHO DO YOU SAY I AM has tons of implications. Who do we say God is? How is that connected to how we live? How we learn? How we choose? How we challenge others, ourselves, and especially the church, in living a life that leaves no doubt that we're faithful, and not just religious? That we're about "justice" and the living of the gospel, rather than the "talking" about the gospel. I had a conversation with a couple of high school teens; a girl from the group asked, "When will the church ordain women?" I loved her courage and boldness. I plainly responded, "I don't know. I don't know if ever." I then quoted a new friend and collegue, Megan, who responded to others asking that question, "What the heck are you waiting for?!" Love it. Don't wait to serve others. Don't wait for anything to change. Don't wait to see if one day you'll preside at mass. Don't wait. This is your time. Your turn. Like Dorothy Day, Teresa of Calcutta, and the bold and untimid disciples, Mary of Nazareth, Mary and Martha of Bethany, and beloved Mary of Magdala, serve now. Love now. Lead now.
That teenaged girl is going places. She is already a leader.
A group of Spanish-speaking teens, led by Jackie, an amazing youth worker, originally from Chile and completely bilingual, informs me of her group. She then challenges me to speak as best I can, sing as best I can, and animate as best I can for the Spanish speaking group. I accept that challenge, jump into it with all of my errors in Spanish, but manage to squeeze a few nods and smiles from my Spanish-speaking sisters and brothers. I am so re-dedicating my efforts to learn this beautiful language and the culture of its many peoples!
We sing tons of stuff from the Spirit & Song hymnal, Choose Christ, GIA stuff, and my own collection of CRAZY SONGS OF FAITH IN MY HEAD. The youth are pretty amazing as always, and the adults are devoted, hanging out in the session, attentive to their youth and the session. After mass, everyone goes home, and I head back to Grand Junction. Dinner with some of the leaders of the community, then back to the hotel for the trip home in the morning.
So much in one day....
