One day after Durango, I'm on a puddle-jumper of a plane to Colorado Springs, for a Youth Festival in Pueblo. There's a theme here. The weekend before...I was in Grand Jct, CO...Hotchkiss, CO...this weekend, Durango, CO and now, Pueblo, CO....all of these events in the Diocese of Pueblo, CO. YIKES....
So Kevin the Awesome and Fredo the Magnificent, (friends of THE Edie Ledesma) pick me up at the airport, we ski, snowboard, eat snow cones off the hill, not the yellow ones.... okay, so we didn't ski, snowboard or eat snow cones at all. But, we did drive back to Fredo's car, and Sir Kevin dropped me off at the hotel. It's an exciting life, but someone's got to live it.
A few hours later, I'm having dinner with Chris and Sam, two youth leaders helping lead the festival the next day, along with many others...sharing some amazing Mexican food and the serenading of these two talented guitar player/singers. They stop at each table and take requests. Kevin and I think of tough songs to request. When the musicians reach our table, they ask if we have a request. I ask, Bohemian Rhapsody, by Queen. They laugh. I ask for Across the Universe by John Lennon, and they split the difference with Obladi-Oblada. It's all good. Bra! La, la, la, la life goes on!
Morning arrives and the Festival is in full swing before we know it! I meet Anthony, Courtney, Marisa, Alejandra, Matt, as well as adults. The day is a sign of full, conscious, and active participation in the faith, the fun, and the mission that is the gospel. Not the warm fuzzy stuff, but the stuff that causes discomfort and unrest. That Jesus, at it again. Kevin and I attend mass immediately after the festival and I thank the organist who played during mass. Great skills, totally knows how to lead the assembly in prayer and not performance. Kevin and I head to the airport to pick up Teresa; we spend some quality time conversing with each other on a number of hot topics in the Church. As well share a meal at the Posh Beanery of Red Robin. Before I know it, I am once again at a hotel ready to pack for the next flight the very next morning. Exhausted and needing sleep, I dream of youth festivals, and Jesus bringing much affliction to our comfort. That Jesus, how he so thrives on bringing all the life changing squiggly wiggly to the party....
Jackson, MS
January 27-28th
Well, the squiggly wiggly of the mission of evangelization continues in the south. In the town of Jackson, Mississippi, to be exact. Miss Kathie Curtis, invited me for a second year in a row, to participate in the Diocese of Jackson, MS, Youth Conference. Ken Penalver joins me on this one. It's good to see Ken. We worked the three days in California just a couple of weeks prior to this. Young people are already pouring into the Marriott Hotel lobby with sleeping bags, ice chests, bags of groceries, crates of cookies, crackers, chips, dips, candy and pop, you know, the typical health food that we know and love in youth ministry circles. Lord have mercy. Ken and I deliver a concert/keynote late in the evening and we hang out greeting youth and adults afterwards. We turn in pretty late and have an early morning call. I wake at 8:45AM when Ken says, "Jess, don't you lead morning praise and prayer at 9AM?" I leap out of bed, brush my face and wash my teeth. Throw on a smiley face tee shirt, and other necessary things, and run to the elevator and into the gathering space. There's no hiding the fact that I just woke up minutes ago. I do my best to get the color back in my face with extreme face stretching contortions. To no avail as folks go, "Dude, did you just wake up?"
Praise happens anyway. In the process, I awake, blood returns to my face as well as to most of my body. Youth from Tupelo, MS, scream me to consciousness. The night before they gave me Elvis memorabila, including a pair of the King's sunglasses with synthetic sideburns surgically attached to the frames. "Thank Ya Very Much!"
Got spend some time with Frank Mercadante, author of POSITIVELY DANGEROUS, and youth worker, extraordinaire, and other keynote of the event. We spoke of our work, our families--we even shared pictures of our beloved families. Very cool.
The folks in Mississippi are hospitable, welcoming, and extremely expressive in their love and support of Ken, Frank, and myself. Met a number of adults who were as heroic as their youth. Listened to the music ministries of STRAW, whose front man, Colin, was the emcee of the event, as well as listened to Joey Everrett. Both groups were absolutely high quality in music and ministry.
Once again, late return to the room, and in a taxi cab by 4:45 in the morning. I've been gone from home since January 20th. I'm in the cab on January 29th. Do the math.
Take me home, country roads, to the place where my family is...Grapevine, TX, mountain mama, take me home, to my bed and pillow and family and Jodi and Jayme and Jennah and her Jack Russell Terrier, Melody...zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....
