I set my alarm for 4AM to catch a 6AM flight to Providence, Rhode Island. I wake the next morning at 6:37AM. I try to pull myself off the ceiling and shouting, SHEEP! I MISSED MY FLIGHT! I'm on the phone with the airlines and am able to book another flight at 10AM that will bring me into Providence, but 3 hours later than originally. Praise God I got the flight and got to Providence in plenty of time.

Duce and Pat invited me to my first Diocese of Providence's Youth Congress over five years ago. Yikes. So this past weekend, I once again looking forward to this powerhouse dynamic duo and their amazing staff and youth of the diocese. Maria picks me up at the airport, and we're off to see the wizard.

Chris Gosselin, Undercover Catechist in training, arrives way before me, so he gets us dialed in soundwise with Jay and Steve, who are running sound and 100 other things. I arrive and we do some final dialing. Familiar faces, hugs, smiles, and before you know it the darn thing begins. DYC 2006, Spirit of God; Source & Strength...to do what? To love, to serve, to live the gospel in real and tangible ways; to be Catholic which is to welcome everyone and exlude absolutely nobody! To be chosen is not about privilege, but about responsibility and accountability. We have the skills we need. They're called spiritual skills. I don't have proof, but in faith I'm imagining that these gifts, are freely given and available by the Holy Spirit. My sense is that the only problem, is that they're given to us. We, the motley, absentminded, forgetful, distracted, self-centered, and yet somehow still graced, favored, blessed and beloved children of God, servants of the Lord, and friends of Jesus....have a shot at the title. Actually, we do have the greatest title. Friend of God. Friend of God who provides what we need.

I see my friends Amanda, Kathleen, Laura, Kimmie... Ken and Stephanie; Jim and Paula Flanagan and others! New friends Sara and Laura, (sister of Kristen), Karl with a "k," James, Tyler, Beth, Becky, Becca, Alex (love that bandana technique at the dance!), Kyle, Caitlin, Allison, Dan, Carol, and so many others. Met one of Pat's cousins, "Nora." I can honestly say that although Steve said that Nora was "his woman," when I met Nora, her aura, her personality, her flair for fashion and surgical precision of lipstick application, left me with the impression that she was too much woman for just one man. And I didn't even mention the leopard skin retro-inline skates, also known as, "rollerskates."

Missionary Sisters of St. Francis were there! They rock the casbah! A number of religious and ordained. Huge number of laity. Oh, yeah, that was us. Bishop Thomas Tobin, was able to preside at his first Eucharistic celebration with the young church of Providence. It was good to see the youth and their pastor. Awards and presentations followed the mass. And after the mass....dinner. HELLO!

Ken, Chris and I went to the Ye Old something or other. Ken had chowder. I had scallops and since Chris doesn't like fish, he had chicken. However, since they cook the chicken in the fish oil, Chris still got fish. It was like, chicken-fish. BUT, his ice tea was delicious!

Back to the event...the last session with Chris and I as we go guitars blazing, shredding, bankrupt beliefs like coleslaw under a Cutco knife. YIKES! What the heck does that mean Obi-Wan-A-Weiner?! Okay, so we finish up the last session with prayer, praise, play, and then the DANCE BEGINS! Here's where burn the real calories.

So Steve and Jay are spinnin' discs like nobody else. Their song selection is so spot on, it's like DJ Bill Lage and Anna Scally are with us in spirit! The music, the energy, the fun, and the solidarity of it all is so seamless, it's like me on a block of SPAM. Wait, I'm eating more healthier, "it's like me on delicious Gala apple with a side of granola." Yeah baby. That's it.

At the end, Steve presents a video collage of memories of the past two days....our faces and our activities give evidence that the Holy Spirit's providence, delivers. Memories are given, received, and packed away for the journey.

Applebees for a snack....coffee milk and clam chowder. Then goodbyes...then Amanda and Kathleen drop me off at the hotel. I'm in and out of sleep. They help me lug my bags and guitar to my hotel room. Hugs. Thank you! Goodnight.

15 minutes later. Where's my wallet? On the phone to Duce who is probably already dressed in her Scooby Doo PJs, and I ask for Amanda's cell phone. Duce calls someone, then Duce calls me then I call Amanda who has just finished putting on her Clay Aiken meets Tim McGraw's Rodeo PJs, Light Green Cowgirl Hat and Country Western Texas Tornado Bed-slippers. She jumps on her horse, I mean her Volkswagen Super Charged Beetle and saves the day. A knock at my door. Amanda's blood red from the lack of sleep. A hug. A thank you. An IOU for 6 Billion Loves, and another goodnight.

I set the alarm. Turn on the ON switch. Before I know it, it's 5AM and Duce is picking me up for the airport. How did all of that happen so fast, so well, so wonderfully, so amazingly....God's Providence. Yes, Providence.
