I Wanna Be Like Ed Dunn.

Ed Dunn walked with God.
Franciscan. Priest. Brother. Companion. Singer of Songs. Disturbing element in the tradition of Jesus, and Francis and Clare of Assisi.
If you were among the many that knew him, marched with him, sang with him, rode on a bus with him, did non-violent civil disobedience with him; well, the blessing was and is still transformative. Ed Dunn served and stood with the poor and marginalized in El Salvador, farmworkers and strawberry pickers in California, folks in deportation jails along the border, immigrants criminalized by prejudice and politics, the homeless in San Francisco and everywhere, and other countless and unseen acts of gospel courage, gospel kindness, gospel justice and gospel compassion.
Ed doesn't need me to write a huge blog of words about him. Simply, Ed lived the life of Francis of Assisi. He scandalized me and the rest of the church with his generosity and self sacrifice. While folks like me and others worry about whether we're orthodox enough or progressive enough; relevant or approved of enough; supported, endorsed, or invited enough....Ed walked with God because he walked with the poor.
Make no mistake. He didn't walk on water, but he walked with God. His heart, his soul, and his love of the poor was bigger than he was, and Ed Dunn was a big, big man. I want to be like Ed Dunn when I grow up. I don't want to be consumed with if I'm good enough, worthy enough, holy enough, liked enough, admired enough, orthodox enough, progressive enough, invited back or invited at all; and God forbid, I don't want to be relevant. I don't want to be born again or scared again. What I want is to walk with God. To walk with the poor. Suffer with the poor. Sacrifice with the poor.
On Sunday, February 12, 2006, around 7PM PST, Ed Dunn, after living with cancer, breathed his last on earth. Ed died as he lived, walking with God.
And Ed walks with God.
And I want to walk with God.
I don't want to just sing, speak, and have a ministry about God.
I want to walk with God.
Like Francis.
Like Clare.
Like Ed.
