Germany -- Part Two

It's Saturday, February 11th, and the morning comes fast. Lisa picks me up at the hotel, breakfast literally on the go and we're off to the chapel for another full day of activity. At 9AM we'll be with the liturgical ministers; mass team leaders, altar server coordinators, music ministers, eucharistic ministers, proclaimers, ministers of hospitality, and more. We've only got an hour and a half together and we make the most of it. Jesus is present in the Eucharist, how about us? Present in our ministry? Present in our work? Family? Present, purposefully passionate about living? Yikes.
From 11AM to 12:30, I've got a session with RE Catechists from Vogelweh and Ramstein. It's a great time to renew our commitment to "make Christ present." Not communicate, convey, and transfer holy and sacred data, but to be in relationship with one another. To acknowledge that life is often messy, uncertain, and surprising. That catechesis is about being in relationship with each other. Making Christ present even and especially through the anger, arrogance, sinfulness, meanness, grudges, gossiping, controlling, and frightening moments of life. Catechesis, Liturgical Ministry, Music Ministry, all of it. It is about encountering God in one another. Sound easy? It's not. But it's the only ride worth riding.
A quick break from 12:30PM to 1:30PM. Mike hooks me up some of the ribs and chicken from the Truck of Terrific Turk Chow. We head up to the Upper Room for a quiet meal. Mid-bite of these amazing ribs, the small tapping sound of tiny feet climbing the stairs towards us....behold, it is Virginia. Armed with a paper plate of grapes, cheese and crackers, she sits in Mike's chair, who went to get beverages, and proceeds to join me for lunch. I am cracking up inside at the bold innocence of the child. She wants to have lunch with me and decides she will. No guile. But wait, "What are you eating?" she asks me. Clearly it's a rib. Then without a thought, she asks, "Can I have one?" I tell her that Mike bought them for he and I, but I'm sure that he wouldn't mind sharing. Her eyes sparkle with excitement as I hand her the succulent sweetness of Turkish culinary magic. With rib in hand, she proceeds to paint her face with rib, occasionally eating as well. Sweet. As I finish my second rib, Virginia begins to do math. "How many ribs have you eaten? she asks. I say "Two." Virginia looks at the one lone rib left on the plate and in gospel justice asks, "I ate one. Can I have that last one?" She rocks. I rejoice that there are five more ribs in the bag beneath the last rib. Alleluia! There is also chicken. Mike returns and joins in the feast. As Mike finishes his lunch, he and Lisa are clearing the table. I go to Lisa's desk to check email from her computer. Virginia finishes her last rib, then proceeds to go back down the stairs towards the annex and chapel. As she leaves, she generously offers me, "Jesse, you could have the rest of my lunch. I'm finished." I look at her paper plate with original grapes, cheese and crackers, and thank Virginia for her wonderful gesture. Alone with a paper plate of two rib bones and half eaten grapes, crackers and cheese, I thank God for visiting me and having lunch with me in a wonderful and holy person such as Virginia.
From 1:30 to 3:30, I will meet with music ministers in the church. There is a mixed group from Ramstein, Vogelweh and even friends of mine from two hours away! Katherine, her family and friend, Melanie, made a road trip for this parish retreat! I met Katherine over three years ago when I presented at the European Catholic Youth Conference in Speier, Germany. The National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministries, INC, invited me to share some time with students of families in the military. It was wonderful to reconnect with the amazing Katherine, Melanie and family! Our workshop experience was not enough time. I share some basic points about music and ministry, and how the foundation is not music, but rather, ministry. Discipleship, service, and growing in relationship with God and one another. Letting God draw us from the comfort of our ministries into the discomfort of serving and sacrificing for one another; welcoming strangers and admonishing the cads and brigands in ourselves, who are so easily sucked into the sweet syruppy safety that is so often mistaken for ministry. I know this and speak with authority on the subject because I am so guilty of it. I feel a rant coming on....God forgive me. Save me from my EGO.
We end our session a little early as I am pretty demolished in my jet lag. Folks have been so patient and understanding with me. I don't deserve it but appreciate it!
Mass is at Vogelweh, so I've only got about 45 minutes to rest before then. I get to the hotel and sit in the chair in my room. The next thing I know someone is knocking on my door because I've overslept. Lisa and I drive to Vogelweh and make it two minutes before mass. I'm in a bit of a coma, but manage to make it all the way through mass. There's a potluck the size of Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, after mass and after the feast, there's me! Yikes and Ay Caramba!
More on the multi-faceted, multi-cultural, multi-gifted church. Lots to talk, sing, pray and play about. We go at it for about an hour and a half and at the end no one moves to go home. So we do one more and then hit the road Jack....hope you come back! Talk with folks afterwards....it's a cool thing. Back to the hotel. CNN is so informative. TV. Must watch. Must have it suck my brains out. Must have....sleep. Goodnight.
