Germany -- Part Three

Somehow I woke up and all of a sudden it was Sunday, February 12th, 2006. It was hard to believe that I'd just left Dallas/Ft Worth on the morning of February 8th. There was a visit at Landstuhl Medical Center dining hall, an radio interview on AFN, a dinner with staff and volunteers, and an evening program in North Chapel. Friday held a visit to CASF, a tour with Ted, lunch at the British cantina, a program for Young Adults, and an evening once again in North Chapel. Saturday brought three workshops in a row; Liturgical ministers, Catechists, and Musicians; mass at Vogelweh and an evening program at their chapel.
How did Sunday get here so fast?! Hanging with 100,000 K-5 elementary kids with their catechists and attending parents. Merciful heavens these little ones are crazy beautiful! I am so at home with them. Off to 12:30 mass right afterwards, and then smack dab right into a Youth Rally with junior high and high school. Holy Canoli! I mean streudel.
Mass at 5PM with a Noi-inspired dinner feast immediately afterward; and back into full swing with the parish evening event. Time has moved so fast. I've met so many children, so many teens, young adults, adults, elders, enlisted, NCO's and officers, single, married, recently deployed, and soon to be deployed....I see their faces in my mind and feel them in my heart even now....it's all a blur, but it is a holy blur and a holy moment. I'm part of this Holy Family parish, no doubt I am. And they're part of my family too. Where did the time go?? I head back to the hotel. Sleep awaits. I miss Jodi and the girls. Only one more night and I'll be back in their arms.
3AM and I'm awake. I call Jodi and whisper her name. She's excited, as I am as well, but I'm a bit sleepy. Just a few minutes of conversation and catching up. I share the love I've recently received from Holy Family, and we bless each other good night. I nod off back to sleepy time and before I know it, I'm awaking and preparing for the last day of the retreat.
A morning with the Catholic Women Of the Chapel, CWOC. It's just an informal sharing of conversation and story. I sing my favorite Bryan Sirchio song, WOMEN WALKED WITH JESUS. Love you Bryan! You live like Jesus...and then one of my favorite Michael Avolicino songs, TAKE A HOLD OF US....yikes! Love ya wingman!
We share the gospel and good news of our living. It's holy, sacred, and inspiring. I share some more music and before you know it, our time is over. I attend daily mass and am happy to celebrate what granny and grandpa did on a regular basis....daily mass. Yikes. Lunch break and before you know it, I'm immersed in a session with the leadership of the parish. Just listening to their reflections of the retreat. A little mystagogia, some talk of future steps for the community; some conversation of what might be needed; it's a flurry of ideas, comments, some whine with our cheese and a mixed salad of hope. The session ends and Lisa and I walk over to the plaza behind the chapel to search for goodies for Jodi and the girls. We head over to the Military Uniform store where I find a Retired Air Force shirt for dad and an Air Force beanie for mom. Goodies and more goodies are found and stashed for the Manibusan girls. A little Doner sandwich and off to the last session of the parish retreat.
It's a simple reiteration of the good news and the responsibilities of the baptized to get up, wake up, stand up, (sometimes shut-up!) and give it up for one another in Christ. Robert has put together a slide show of the 5 day retreat and I play music as each image flashes on the screen.
These faces. These places. Where God has taken us and continues to take us. We all receive our "orders" in our baptism. We're all PCS and TDY all at once in the realm of God. To love, to welcome everyone and exclude no one. To serve, sacrifice and celebrate with passion and purpose what God is accomplishing in us. Blurring the lines between all of us; young and old, enlisted and officer, friend and enemy; Catholic, Protestant, Jew, Muslim....
First century Palestine....a time of Jesus, Mary, Joseph....a voice and presence that speaks to us in 2006....and a time for each of us to take our turn. And we take our turn and do the best we can. Even in the midst of war, we seek the peace that passes all understanding. It's elusive but possible.
We begin right where we are, smack dab in the middle of our living...in our loving...in our caring and sacrificing for one another. In the messy and precarious moments of living, breathing, dying and rising. Yikes.
I exchange hugs and goodbyes to all my Air Force family....and my Army family...and my civilian and contractor family....goodnight and God bless to Fr. Jim and Fr. Dave...to all my little friends of Jesus....until we meet again. You have been a light to me. I will never forget you. I will walk with each of you as I strive to walk with God. And in this, we'll only be a thought and a prayer away.
So thank God.
Thank You.
With you,,
Jesse
