BROKEN BOW, NEBRASKA, Feb. 25-27, 06

Fr. Todd invited me to give a parish mission to his community. He and Sr. Bernita are leading the folks from three different parishes at one time, which if you think is tough, imagine what they had to go through when there were five or six additional smaller churches in the area. Due to the decreasing numbers of folks in the area, and especially the decreasing numbers of priests, those smaller parishes were closed, buildings sold, and parishes consolidated. It's happening all over the country and beyond. I got to spend time at all the masses, played a little guitar with their groups, and gave a plug for the mission. During the evening we had pretty good turnouts with folks of all ages attending. Offering words of encouagement

for the faithful to be faith-full. In the mdist of changes, surprises, more changes and more surprises, be faithful. In the midst of storms, and especially droughts, be faithful. Acknowledge one another. Affirm and encourage one another. Spend time together. Be present to one another. Really present.

Visited the town plaza during the day. Pharmacy, Dollar Store, Fountain Shoppe where there's a real soda fountain and milkshakes! Back away from the milkshake, Jesse. Put your hands over your head and back away from the milkshake!

Broken Bow is cattle country. During one of the days, Fr. Todd and I drove around the area; about three or four miles outside of town, we saw a kabillion head of cattle. Lord have mercy the cattle covered so much land, it looked like the land was moving. The feed lot didn't smell too good, but let me tell you about the flat iron steak back at the hotel restaurant, HELLO. Mama Mia, that's a some'a spicy meatball!

Back in town we stopped a got a bottle of water and a bottle of pop and just hung outside greeting folks. Bumped into a parishioner who actually paid for Fr. Todd's and my drinks. In fact, a lot of folks in town recognized Fr. Todd. The man has presence in his community. Sr. Bernita's got some mojo too. That Dominican is a force. The community is blessed to have Bernita. She seems to just excude "let's get it done" attitude. Todd and Bernita make a great team for the leadership of the community.

It was all good. Good mission. Good folks. Good faith. Good leadership. God is Good.

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, March 2-4, 06

So Catherine Mensi, Director of Youth Ministry in the diocese of Memphis, and her husband, Deacon Joe, pick Kenny Penalver, Paul "Elvis" Archuletta, and myself up at the airport. We pack up both vehicles and off we go. We've known the Mensi's for a couple of years now, and they're a hoot together or apart. We check in at the hotel, and then get picked up by Bruce Glaser, all around good guy. Head over to dinner, where my old buddy Paul Berrell joins us. Sarah Glaser joins us. Mama G (Peggy Glaser) joins us as well and before you can say "Elvis is your uncle" we are out the door headed to St. Ann's for a concert. Paul and his group will open for Kenny and I, and music is made, Spirit is flowing, folks are singing and God is here.

In the morning Kenny and I have a presentation at St. Dominic's High School. We have two concerts in a row. 45 minutes flies right by. Cool to hang with some of the students afterwards. We actually head over to the cafeteria to chomp and hang with students. Meet some great folks, Adam, Drew, Chloe, Amanda, Kenny, and others. Later that evening Kenny, Paul and I are the Memphis version of Randy, Paula and Simon from American Idol. There are supposed to be two other "judges" for the "Shining Star" talent competition, however, it's just us three stooges. The talent is stunning. It is both a joy and a pain to judge this thing. Each student is amazing in their own way. Each shares their talent and then a word of faith. Pretty cool concept. After the show, Kenny and I put on a concert. We let our hair down and pretty soon we're "Walkin' In Memphis" along with "Nothin' But A Hound Dog." Paul "Elvis" Archuletta struts his stuff and folks murmur, "I told you he was still alive."

Later that night, in the Glaser van, Elvis, Kenny and I make it to Beale Street. YIKES. We spend about an hour there listening to these two piano player/singers go at it. I remember my buddy John Angotti blazing on one of those pianos and scaring the heck out of Billy Joel.

We share a full day of conference/rally with the youth of the diocese. We pray, play and display our faith. The students deliver the conference as emcees, prayer leaders, and leaders of the community in general. Catherine and her team are great empowerers of young people. The day is over before it even begins.

Sarah, Paul, Kenny, Elvis and I spend some time together afterwards. Memphis. You gotta love Memphis. Walkin' with my feet ten feet off of Beale.
