Bryan Lorentz, one of the many and cool sons of Kathy and David; beloved of Missy and visa versa; welcomer of everyone and excluder of no one; student, singer, guitarist, traveler, seeker, and friend of Jesus the non-violent peacemaking holy one. A few years ago, Bryan asks me, "Jesse, would you consider letting me intern for you this summer?" I answered, "What's an intern?" Now I remember

APeX Ministries and their intern Jeff, some years prior to Bryan's question, so I had some absolutely clear fuzzy recollection of what it might possibly be and then maybe not. I asked Bryan a ton of questions, in part to help him discern more deeply the theological and faith formational ramifications of such an endeavor, as well as help me understand what the heck I was getting myself into in the event I said "yes."

More conversation with Bryan....Kathy, David...Bryan. Prayer. Discernment.

Bryan traveled with me to a number of places around the country. Among them, a house of hospitality for families living with HIV, a residential house for seniors, a day house of hospitality for men, many churches, dioceses, youth groups, and so forth. My favorite moments were just driving to or from a place, or just hanging out at the end of a long day, reflecting on the many grace-filled moments. Lots of conversation. Lots of great and challenging questions.

At the National Catholic Youth Conference in Houston, TX, I totally injure my right leg doing my best impression of Big Boy Pogo onstage with Ken Canedo. For the next two days, I'm either in a wheelchair, golf cart, or just plain limping painfully from place to place. At the end of the last day, Bryan finds ice, bags it, elevates my leg onto a chair with pillows, wraps it with the ice and hello dolly. Jodi and my daughters witness the love and I, of course, am filled with gratitude. So naturally I ask, "Where's my Popeye's chicken?!"

Bryan and my daughter Jayme had taken some of our dinner, downstairs to a man who had been in a wheelchair outside all day. It was evening now, and the man had not bathed recently as you could smell him from blocks away. Clearly, this man was a thorn in the side of the hotel management, as well as a good reason for most folks to ignore, turn away, or simply cross the street so as to avoid being contaminated by his filth. The smell of this man was so putrid, oh, I shake my head in just recalling it. Earlier in the evening when my family, Bryan, and a couple of other friends, returned to our hotel, I made sure to make eye contact with the man, and even said, "How ya doin?" No way I was going to ignore Jesus. HEY! Wussup Prayer.

"Where's my Popeyes's Chicken. I ordered popcorn chicken! Where's my darn popcorn chicken?!"

Bryan and Jayme returned and said that "Glenn was so happy that we brought him dinner!" Bryan and Jayme related how they had a great conversation with Glenn, and that one of Glenn's favorite food was Popeye's popcorn chicken.

I'm sure Bryan sought to learn from Jesse, the Itinerant Witness/Undercover Catechist and Catholic Ninja Master. He may have learned a couple of little things along the way. Me? I was the student. The Master in Bryan was, and is, apparent and really present.

Love you Bryan.

Eternal thanks.

Namaste.
