So Duce and I were wondering last February at the Diocesan Youth Congress; how would it be to spend a week in the diocese visiting as many schools and parishes. YIKES. So I fly right from Vegas to Chicago, to Providence. We are going to mission "Catholic To The Core" to LaSalle Academy, Bishop Hendricken High, Our Lady of Fatima, Bishop Keough High, a Catholic Middle School Youth Rally at Msgr. Clarke, an evening for everyone at the same place; another middle school rally at Fr. Marot CYO Center with Bishop Tobin present; St. Jude in Lincoln, and
then back at Fr. Marot CYO for COMMOTION. So Duce and I are just traveling all over the diocese meeting with, working with, praying with, laughing with, serving with every age group imagineable. A great way to "go where they are." Lots of support from Jay and Tim on sound, Steve and Sue on coffee milk and hot weiners; Duce on Doughboys...let me tell you about Doughboys...or not, let me just eat them. Lots of them. And I did. I think Pat even got to eat a couple. Duce had one or two. Lord have mercy. Hello. So it was crazy wicked good this Diocesan Youth Mission. I'm guessing we reached over 6000 students in a week's time.
Scott Morin, youth maniac from Immaculate Conception, picks me up on Saturday night, and we go right to the Flanagan Hacienda where the Jesse Room is waiting for me (as well as two very husky cats named Sebastian and Bartholomew). Jim and Paula are out celebrating the birthday of Jim. Let's see, go to Jim's party or sleep....hmmm...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Dude, I'm exhausted, drained and tapped out....I then, go ten toes up. The very next morning, Uncle Jimmy and I head over to Church for mass. A quick "good morning and goodbye" to Paula and we're gone. I sing and plug the evening's "concert." Get breakfast near the Church with Jim and Scott. Scott is like the mayor because everyone greets him, and more importantly, he greets everyone and knows them by name. The dude rocks. He is "relational ministry" in the flesh. Bam. Spend most of the day at Church, and then in the evening a parish "concert." A great turnout of folks. Michelle Garrity and a number of her parish's youth are there! A quick hello and then the concert's on the move. Stories, songs, silence, more songs and stories. At the end of the night, Scott invites the church to pray for me. They present with this cool Immaculate Conception medal. I'm diggin it. Late night with Jim and Scott. Back to the Flanagan Palace near 1AM? Waking up at 4AM to catch a flight to Utah. Guess who's waking up and driving? Uncle Jimmy.
The flight to Salt Lake City is only bearable because Big Daddy Jess got the one and only, upgrade! Thank you Lord. I simply sleep all the way. Total sleep. Mary Fasig picks me up a the airport with Dave, the super sensational choir and band director at Juan Diego Catholic High. I meet Jo Cendagorta and Lynelle Williams. I'm here for the FESTIVAL. One late afternoon concert with the students, and one evening session with a small group of staff from the school. An evening of simple affirmation and encouragement. Then I was at the hotel...for you know what...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Days fly by, with freshmen and sophmores, juniors and seniors. A thank you dinner for friends and benefactors of the school. It is a wonderful, suprising time. I meet some pretty cool folks, both students and teachers. A beautiful festival in honor of Juan Diego, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and all of the people of Juan Diego Catholic High School. A three day festival in Utah, a one day in Massachusetts, a six day mission in Rhode Island, and five day conference in Vegas. Fifteen days. Five of them with Jodi and Jennah, but 15 days nonetheless. Somebody smack me.
