The state, Missouri. The city, Kansas City. The parish, Holy Family. First mission of the year and more to come! Patty Whelchel picks me up at the airport, drives me to the parish, and hello? I'm dizzy and in a daze. Cancelled flight the night before. Four hours of sleep, and now in a state of delirium. I meet many of the folks. Went right into a pot luck luncheon, then an adult session, then over to the hotel for some rest before the evening program. Lots of families at Holy Family -- that's an appropriate name for the parish! The next morning I head over to New Mark

Care where Fr. Matthew says mass once a month. I break out the guitar and lead some songs. It rocks. It's the stuff. Mass ends, and we head over to St. James, a sister parish of Holy Family's. Deacon Ross answers the door for Fr. Matthew and myself. We meet David and a few other community members. Old, old and beautiful parish. A lot of history here, as well as numerous ethnic groups for the world over. We share a meal, and then some story and song. After, Fr. Matthew drops me off at the hotel for some rest, and back to the parish for the evening program. Once again, the church is pretty full. Cool to see so many folks come out each night. Three days and three nights and all is good.

Saturday afternoon, I catch a ride from Stacy Piontek. She is the champion of youth people at Sacred Heart Church in Warrensburg. Her daughter Hally lets me ride shotgun as we head over to Panera's for some sandwich chomping. Dude, we're eating our lunch and BLAM!POW!BOOM! A car has lost control, and crashes right into the transformer right outside in front where we're eating! Imagine this, if that transformer doesn't stop the oncoming car, guess who the car hits.

YES. Me, Hally and Stacy. A bunch of us run out of the restaurant to offer assistance to the folks in the crashed car, now leaking fluid and smoking big time. An elderly man was driving, his wife in the back seat is dazed, and two of us help her out of the car and as far away from the smoke as possible. We comfort her, get her a chair and a blanket. There are lots of folks helping. Pretty cool. I go back and pull the keys from the ignition. I've got blood on my hands, as the elderly man must have cut himself on the steering wheel. YIKES. Emergency crews arrive rather quickly and all of us let the professionals do what do best. CRAZY! Hally, Stacy and I just witnessed something....not just the crash, but the amount of love and help right there! Cool beans. We leave Panera and drive to Warrensburg. I'm dropped off at the hotel for a little rest and refreshment, then head right over to the Church, to sing at mass and plug the mission. Willard, a big man with a big heart, walks right up to me, welcomes me and makes me feel right at home. Fr. Dennis, Ralph, Linda, Winona and I have dinner at Monetti's, where the Italian food rocks. Guliani welcomes us, Niko serves us and we're good to go. Hello bacon wrapped scallops and fresh baked bread. Momma Monetti's recipes. I meet the rest of the Monetti family later at the mission. Sunday morning, again I attend the masses, and then plug the mission. Great music makers there with huge heart. Lots of variety! Loretta on guitar, Sarah on piano, Ellie on violin, Ed conducting, Bill cantoring; lots of guitars and singers; Shari, Kayla, Beth, and Michaela from the Newman center lead the Sunday evening music....Andrew and Elina, originally from Malaysia, welcome me and actually assist me with getting amplification for my guitar! On one of the nights, my friend Syd and her dad, Rich, drive over an hours distance to attend the mission. Syd and I started emailing each other over a year ago. It was fun meeting the face behind the emails! I think we hugged 27 times that night. Then we went to Taco Bell, courtesy of Karen, and talked some more, took some pictures, and creeped out the Taco Bell staff a little. During the course of the mission, I meet more of the Monetti family, Gabriella, Antonio, and Brie. Dad Monetti, Tony, Lt. Colonel Tony Monetti, cruises me in his corvette to the Air Force Base, and I get a tour of the tower where I witness four, count 'em, four B2 stealth bombers touch and go. Mamma Mia, it's an awesome sight that brings up all kinds of feelings...the Franciscan in me starts singing "Make me a channel of your peace," while the Air Force brat (dad was a 20 year man) begins humming the song, "Up we go, into the wild blue yonder..." Tony and I get to share some time, a little story. We commit to pray for each other. At some point we make it over to Mexico Lindo and Oriental Cuisine. The latter is right near the base and wow, tons of airmen in uniform are having lunch. Flashback to my childhood. Or flashback to my visit to Ramstein AFB, in Germany last February. Got to see a childhood friend, Marcy (Kleim) Reilly, her husband Dennis (I sang at their wedding over 10 years ago), and their two children. See a lot of folks. I sing for the three year olds and the four year olds in the pre-school. Ms. Caroll is amazing with those kids. Get to have dinner with Stacy and Flip's family, Paul and Tammy's family, and fish over at Karen's house! YIKES. What a home! It has two lakes! Speaking of home, I finally make it home on Wednesday morning. Jodi picks me up at the airport. Cue the music, we hug, kiss, make goo goo eyes at each other, and start singing the "Far Away" from Nickelback. Hey, hey, don't hate. Appreciate. Good to be home. Lots of love in Missouri, and it's good to be home.
